Our Tana'im and Amora'im were divided about how the Geula will transpire (Sanhedrin 93). Will the Geula occur only when all of Am Yisrael does Tshuva or will it happen earlier?
R' Eliezer held the view that everything is dependent upon Tshuva, but added that Hashem will ensure that Am Yisrael will repent by "imposing upon them a ruler whose edicts will be as harsh as Haman's, causing Am Yisrael to repent".
According to this view, Hashem uses severe tactics to inspire Am Yisrael to repent, Each of us can gain this insight, by accepting what '7"rn called the ninN "7U QUID" (inflictions of love). We can't elevate ourselves by asking "Why has this happened to me? Why are others so fortunate, while I suffer?"
Only if we accept the view that these tribulations are not circumstantial, but rather that Hashem is prodding us to action, can we examine our faults and correct them.
That which is true for the individual is also true for the aggregate. For many years we have suffered the DHID" of terror, Ours is not to ask, why? - but to ask, what is Hashem's purpose?
The individual corrects his personal faults through introspection and so too does the community of Am Yisrael and Rosh Hashana is the appropriate time for such a process. We as an aggregate must strengthen a system of value oriented education. We need to determine which are the values we should install in our children, at a time when the nations around us are obviously not prepared to live in peace with us.
